Little Island is the product of Thomas Heatherwick’s boundless imagination and pennies from heaven - in this case provided to the tune of $113m by Hollywood and tech mogul Barry Diller and his wife, the fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. Open to all, this remarkable structure and landscape replaces the original Pier 54 which was obliterated by Hurricane Sandy. Americans donate massive sums to charity, partly encouraged by favourable tax deductions. Others are also drawn by the vanity of charity… a hospital wing or annex at the public library bearing the donor’s name is a common sight in America. Detractors decry the privatisation of taxation being the privilege of the super rich, but the benefit to the public is hard to argue with.
