The sad emptiness of American airports

Blog | By James Fletcher | Jul 12, 2020

George W. Bush and Barack Obama are two recent US presidents not to have an airport named after them - yet. I am sure Trump has given this matter serious consideration. Here at a desolate JFK on a Friday evening, it feels rather sad and lonely - scarce activity inside and outside. A library-grade silence. No queues. Or people cramming round information screens. No golf cart-like conveyances beeping irritably. All boutiques closed with the occasional shop selling shrink-wrapped mediocrities battling on. Although BA has reinstated transatlantic operations, the 14 day quarantine on arrival at Heathrow, with readmission to the US limited to citizens and Green Card holders, has muted passenger numbers for some time, at least until border harmony is restored.
