Since Brexit, the number of Brits claiming Irish citizenship has boomed. By Mary Kenny

It’s 100 years since the British formally left southern Ireland, when the Irish Free State was established. But now the Brits have a cunning plan to return: by emigrating to Ireland and taking up Irish citizenship. The number of British people granted Irish citizenship this year has soared by 1,200 per cent (since Brexit). Ireland now attracts immigrants from 180 countries globally – and by far the greatest number of applications for citizenship comes from those born in Great Britain. In 2020, some 1,191 Britons were granted citizenship of the Irish Republic – rising from just 54 in 2015. ...
