Celtic prayers are full of beautiful imagery. Much of it is taken from nature and the day to day tasks people carried out. They were a rural people and relied on the sheep and the shepherds. They tended to see God as the great, tender and brave shepherd. In our individualistic times, we might react about the idea of being like sheep. But I for one am happy to take the protection of the great Shepherd.

As Thou art the Shepherd over the flock

Tend thou us to the cot and the fold,

Sain us beneath Thine own glorious mantle;

Thou shield of protection, guard us for ever.
