Basil Brush - from Oldie of the Year to the Generation Game!

Blog | By Harry Mount | Jul 06, 2020

Last Tuesday, Basil Brush was charming Judi Dench, June Whitfield and Jilly Cooper (pictured) at the Oldie of the Year Awards – where we honoured him with the 21st Century Fox of the Year.

And now it has just been announced that he is to present the Generation Game, alongside Mel and Sue. Far be it from us to say, but has the Oldie of the Year award been a springboard for international fame for our fox hero?

Basil was accompanied last week by his handler since 2000, Mike Winsor. But we also honoured his co-creators: Peter Firmin, 90 this year, and the late Ivan Owen, who was Basil from his creation in 1963 until Owen's death in 2000. It was Owen who gave Basil that distinctive Terry-Thomas voice, his anarchic character and the 'Boom-boom' catchphrase.

We salute Basil and all those involved in his magical creation, and wish him the best of luck as he conquers the topmost heights of the showbiz world.
