Hollywood in lockdown

Blog | By James Fletcher | Jul 06, 2020

This is Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles - an entertainment industrial complex the size of a large village - with several sound stages, some the size of an aircraft hangar, large enough to fit two 747 jumbo jets. You’ll also see outdoor filming sets, endless offices, and private cinemas. The film and television industry ground to a halt in March with only post production ticking along - editing, scoring, colouring etc - largely solo endeavours. It’s a highly unionised business which adds an extra obstacle to restarting, especially on projects where social-distancing is impossible. Most productions work on a 3 year start to finish timetable, minutely planned, involving hundreds of people. Consequently many films and TV programmes due for delivery at this time are now late, or have been cancelled altogether.
