New York’s new graffiti

Blog | By James Fletcher | Jun 26, 2020

When looters decided a fitting tribute to George Floyd was to indulge in a spree of recreational crime, stealing trainers, clothes, everything from Apple etc, overnight the majority of retailers fortified their premises with chipboard (and removal of all branding), making New York look like a depressing deserted 70s city. And anti-police, RIP George graffiti was scrawled across the chipboard… even though some cladding is now coming down - on restaurants - it remains on non-essential retail and some artists have been covering the graffiti with more positive messages and paintings - of varying levels of artistry. In truth, it’s hot and humid in New York in a volatile election year and tempers are frayed. Although police are adopting a lower profile, there is still potential for unrest.
