Sunday 29 November
I have always found Advent a bit odd. Perhaps it is the gloomy time of year. Especially this year we seem locked in a perilous darkness and Christmas is probably creating mixed feelings. The themes of Advent are also a bit unsettling; dark, light, the end-times, hope, love and joy. It is as though all human emotions are clustering together, calling us to pay attention to this time of waiting and preparation. The joy of Christmas is the promise, but we need to go through some ominous times.
Cardinal John Henry Newman’s little prayer starts us on our Advent journey together.
May (God) support us all day long, till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed…and our work is done.
