I think there is something full-throated about the way the ancients used to pray. I love their boldness and the way they confronted the problem of evil head-on. There was nothing wishy-washy about them at all. Advent is a pilgrimage (a journey with a holy destination) and also a battle. None of us like waiting for the main event – we want to get things over with so we can enjoy the presents. In Advent we can find a bit of time to take our spiritual temperature and to reflect on some of the difficulties of life and of the interior lives we all have.

It is good to have friends alongside us on any perilous journey. I would pick an angel – St Michael to be with me. This old Benedictine prayer is a cracker.

Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray…
