Thursday 10th December
We returned to the theme of peace today. I was very fortunate to grow up in a peaceful home. My parents were very intentional about that. My dear old dad grew up in chaos and the feelings of fear that that engendered stayed with him a lifetime. He was insistent the house in which he was the father would not be like that. He tried some ideas out on us. We had a family council meeting where we could raise concerns with each other. I have to say it wasn't much of a success because my parents had quite a lot to say about my brother and I and we could never think about what to say in reply. But it was a lovely idea.
My dad had been a debt collector in the East End and he was exceptionally tough. He saw it as his role to look after us and protect us and I see that as my role as a father as well. This little Celtic gem sums up that sense that we have of needing protection for our households.
God, guard the household members and the hall, God consecrate the mother’s children all, God, all the flocks and young in safety keep; be after them and tend them from the fold.
